James Girling

On first picking up the guitar twenty years ago, James spent ten years learning music solely by ear; prior to reading notation, he self-taught by transcribing recordings encompassing bossa nova, bebop and classical guitar repertoire. Transcription remains integral to his daily practice as an improviser, interpreter and arranger. Lately, James has also been  transcribing and studying a repertoire of solos and compositions by the pioneering gypsy jazz guitar virtuoso, Django Reinhardt: a selection is now available here as sheet music, complete with detailed embellishments and articulations.

Please note: these transcriptions are presented in standard notation rather than tablature, as Django's left hand condition may have caused him to use fingerings and positions that differ from those another guitarist may prefer when playing this material.
